So I probably should be blogging more, but I never seem to have the time to do anything FUN these days! Here is a glimpse into my life the past month or so..

At my job (I work for the United States Institute of Peace), I specifically work on a program called the National Peace Essay Contest (learn more at www.usip.org/npec). It is an essay contest for high school students in the US that awards $1,000.00 state scholarships (and 3 national scholarships out of those state winners- $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500 respectively). The students have an essay topic that relates to conflict resolution and peacebuilding-- which just so happened to be the topic of Governance and Corruption for this year. Needless to say, the judging process, and mailing out of materials to these students is a long process. Ever since I started this job, back in February, I have been working on this contest. However, we have moved from the phase of judging and sending out winning materials to preparing for their arrival for the awards week. So, these students who win for their respective states come to DC for a 5 day long Awards Week Program, which was last week. I have been in contact with the students and their parents coordinating this trip. I have made all the packets, collected all the paperwork, helped book travel, and on top of that they visit Capitol Hill while they are here so I arranged Hill appointments. Each student has 3 appointments, and there were 44 students attending this year (some people were not able to come and some states did not have winners because of lack of entries or we didn't chose a winner for lack of poor essay quality). However, since USIP has been going through a number of congressional battles this year, USIP decided to send an additional staffer with each student this year. So that doubled my work (I had to make packets for all the staff and coordinate with them). AH I made about 80 Hill appointments in 2 days and I managed to schedule ALL the appointments.. I couldn't even believe that I was able to do that... I had a panic moment there for a bit. So needless to say my job has been really busy. I actually clocked in 54 hours last week, with taking Friday off!

On top of that, I am also taking 7 credits this summer. Trust me, that is a lot of extra work. I have one online class called Identity and Conflict taught by Korostelina, and an in person class called Religious Response to Genocide taught by Bruce Aft (Tuesday and Thursdays 7:20-10:00 PM). THEN I also had a 2 day class (1 credit course) taught by TechChange called Technology for Peacebuilding. It was a great course. We participated in a few simulations like a mock Afghan election that utilized Frontline SMS and Ushahidi. I learned a lot about these technological tools, and was really impressed by the ease of them. This class just so happened to coincide with the same weekend that the Peace Essay kids were arriving, so I was pretty busy. On top of that, my sisters graduation was on that Friday.. so I had to make a day trip down to Virginia Beach. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I'm so proud of Mariah.

So this week is a week to finish up some homework and relax a bit. Work isn't nearly as busy as it was as last week. I could really use a vacation right now! It's too bad that I have class or else I'd be in Oregon at the Weber family get together.

In addition to all this, I have been religiously writing Andrew daily. Because he is in boot camp for the Marine Corps, he is not allowed to make calls or email..nothing. So the only method of communication we have is letters.. I know, how primitive, right? Haha. Let me just note that ever since he was allowed to send letters (about 1 1/2 weeks into his boot camp) he has written me a letter every single day. He is a great husband! What other husband would do that?

He left on May 31st and he graduates on August 26th... so he is essentially gone for 3 months. It's a long time, but time seems to be flying by. The first week was the hardest. I didn't think it would be hard because I got to use the car and would have the apartment to myself and have freedom to hang out with my friends.. but it was really hard. The moment I saw him pull away in the car I just lost it. And then not receiving a letter from him for a whole week and a half (and not having his address to send him anything), I was panicking. But I finally got a letter and since then things have been better. I cried when I got my first letter from him in the mail cause I was just so emotionally drained from missing him and waiting for a letter from him. I guess I love him, huh?

So I figured I'd share a few thoughts from his letters:

He wakes up every day at 4 AM, goes to bed at 8 PM unless he has Firewatch. He has been running a lot, doing martial arts, did an obstacle course, and an 8 mile hike. He is still in Training Phase I. I think Training Phase II and III are a lot harder. He says he will be spending a lot more time outside during the day (in the HOT SC sun!). He is constantly tired of the younger kids in boot camp with him (he knew this before signing up), and he said he likes his Senior DI... all in all he sounds pretty positive. Never complains, except he says that waking up at 4 AM to yelling is his least favorite part of it all. If you want to write him, please ask me for his address. He LOVES letters!

Fixing the apartment!

So I've been working hard on this apartment. I sold our small black dining room table.. for $125 mind you! I got it from Walmart 8 months ago for $200... I'd say I sold it for a good price :). Before Andrew left for boot camp, we bought a really nice table from World Market. It will be our dining room table for a long time, though. It is the only thing that we have really splurged on in our apartment. There is nothing else in our place worth more than $400.00 (furniture wise). But we really love our table and I can def see it used as a table for our family one day.

I'm also almost done with our dining room. We got a small buffet and some artwork, oh yeah and a carpet which I LOVE! Here are some pictures, posted below. I love this room so much more.. it used to be dark but now it is beautiful!

I got this chair off craigslist.. $130 and it is in PERFECT condition. What a steal!

Furniture from Home Goods: mirror $25, buffet $100, lamp $30, etc.

Awesome picture from Target... we had to have something with France on it since Andrew is 1/2 French

Lovely room.. new everything basically

Looks so much brighter in here!

Still working on what I'm going to put on the shelves. They just have random things right now.

Andrew's Surprise Party & Graduation

So last weekend I threw Andrew a surprise party.. he had no idea that this was all going on, so you can only imagine the look on his face when he was greeted by 20-30 of his closest friends and family. I was really glad that the majority of the invitees were able to attend, especially some of his friends that made huge sacrifices to be there. We're grateful to have such wonderful people in our lives, and it is a true testament to the person that he is that all these people would take time out of their day to attend something for him. He is a wonderful person, and I couldn't have picked a better husband.

The following day, on Sunday, Andrew graduated from NOVA with his Associates in Administration of Justice, specializing in Criminal Justice. I am so proud of him for finishing 2 years of school, and I'm excited for him to start pursuing his Bachelors next year.

Also, today is his 25th birthday! I just wanted to let everyone know! Tomorrow is my birthday (24th), too. We're going to Philadelphia this weekend with Brett and Mesia (brother in law and sister in law) to see Fleet Foxes and tour the city (Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, philly cheese steaks, etc). We're also stopping at Gettysburg on the way home. What a great birthday weekend it will be!

Also highly important is the fact that Andrew leaves for boot camp in 10 days! I can't believe it is here so fast! I am going to miss him so much.. what will I do without my best friend? Oh well, I am so happy for him and anxious to see who he will be when he gets home-- 3 months later. I get to talk to him only once over those 3 months, so it will be a challenge, but I'm proud of him for serving a cause bigger than himself.

That's all for now. I'll post pictures of graduation and this weekend later.

More house stuff

So I have slowly been shopping around for living room stuff-- since I had last blogged we had received our pillow cases (although I had to ship 3 of the pillows back for wrong size, so they are not in the photo yet), three small decorative mirrors I got from Target, and some awesome curtains from World Market. I have realized more and more throughout this decorating process that not only do I like clean, cottage looking themes, but I also like Indian designed themes... so that is what I went with for our living room. Since we had purchased a lot of darker furniture from IKEA, and I don't typically like too much dark furniture in a room, I had to go with a theme that complimented it... hence the indian (from India, not Native American) theme in our living room.

Oh yeah, and I painted since my last blog too-- just a slight tan/yellow color to warm up the walls. And added another lamp next to our desk ($50 Home Depot.. love it)

Anyways, what do you think so far? It is coming along but there is still a lot to be done... all in due time. We're poor students!!

What have I been up to?

Researching the Ivory Coast, illegal immigration (Mexico/US Border), and the Buganda tribe in Uganda. FUN!

School can be fun but very overwhelming.. especially when it is coupled with work and all the other things I have to do. I am realizing where I am slacking off..and I need to get those priorities straight... so sorry if I have been distant in the past month or so...

Anyways, changes are fast approaching in Andrew's life.. he leaves for boot camp at the end of May... it is too soon, honestly.

Enough for now. I need to get back to my work/school-work. What fun!

I Have a Story to Tell...

I have a story to tell. It is a story filled with hardship, triumph, and hope... I'm talking about the story of the Rwandan people.

17 years ago today one of the most violent and brutal campaigns against humanity happened in a small unknown country called Rwanda. Between the span of 100 days close to 1 million (roughly between 800,000 and 1 mill) Rwandans were slaughtered, mostly by machete. This ethnic conflict was devastating to this small country, and resentment and hatred still exists there.. but overall most of the Rwandan population have overcome the hardships of a post-conflict society and are moving towards reconciliation and healing. They are hopeful and optimistic.. I love these people with all of my heart and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to travel to this small country and meet these individuals. Half of my heart is still in Rwanda, and will remain there for the rest of time. I am thinking of them today as they struggle to cope with the atrocities that happened 17 years ago, but I am optimistic that they will overcome this and build better lives for themselves.

By the way, last year I was in Rwanda during this commemoration period and I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the commemoration ceremony. What a great experience. I have never seen people gather together in the way that they did that day. Read about my experience at  SEND ME TO RWANDA BLOG

I also have pictures on my facebook in my Rwanda 2 album.

PS I have Rwandan music on my IPOD today
